We get this call a few times a month. Somebody outside Bolivar or Greenfield wants solar, we pull up their address, and their roof is a problem. Maybe it faces the wrong way. Maybe it’s an older farmhouse roof that needs replacing first. Maybe there’s a stand of oaks that shades the whole south side by two in the afternoon. On a lot of properties in town, that would be the end of the conversation.
Out here it usually isn’t. Because these folks have something a suburban homeowner doesn’t. Land.
A ground mount is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of putting panels on your roof, we build a rack in your yard, pasture, or an unused corner of a field, and the panels go there. For acreage properties in southwest Missouri, it’s often the better system, not the fallback.
Why acreage owners are good candidates for ground mount
The whole point of solar is unshaded, south-facing space that catches sun all day. On a farm you can usually pick your spot instead of being stuck with whatever direction the house happens to point.
That freedom matters more than people expect. We can angle a ground mount at the ideal tilt for this latitude, which a fixed roof plane rarely lets us do. We can keep it clear of the tree line. And if the best solar spot is 150 feet from the house, that’s fine, we trench a line to it.
There’s also the roof question. If your metal roof or shingles are getting close to needing work, putting a solar array up there means paying to take it down and reinstall it later. That’s a real job, we call it a solar detach and reset, and it costs money. A ground mount skips that whole problem. Your roof stays a roof.
What actually goes into a ground mount
The panels are the same ones we’d put on a house. The difference is what holds them up.
We set posts, usually into concrete footings or driven piers depending on your soil, and build a steel racking frame on top. Then the panels bolt to that. The wiring runs underground back to your inverter and main panel. On bigger systems we’ll spec battery backup so you keep power when the grid goes down, and out on rural lines that go down more than they should. We install Sol-Ark and StorzPower systems for that.
A few real considerations for a ground mount that a roof system doesn’t have:
- You need enough open, unshaded ground. A typical home-size array wants a footprint bigger than most people picture, so we walk the property and mark it.
- The soil matters. Rocky Ozarks ground and soft bottomland call for different footings.
- Trenching distance from the array to your electrical panel affects the job. Closer is cheaper.
None of that is a dealbreaker. It just means the site visit actually matters, which is why we don’t quote ground mounts off a satellite photo alone.
Does a ground mount cost more than a roof system?
Sometimes, sometimes not. The racking and the trenching add cost that a roof mount doesn’t have, since a roof is already a structure. But you save on the roof work you’d eventually pay for anyway, and ground mounts are easier and cheaper to clean, service, and repair because everything is at standing height. Nobody’s on a ladder.
For the actual dollars, that depends entirely on your property, your usage, and how far the array sits from your panel. We won’t throw a number at you here that turns out wrong when we walk the land.
On incentives, we get asked about the federal solar tax credit and about farm-specific programs like USDA REAP almost every time acreage comes up. The rules on both have shifted, so we won’t quote a percentage or a program detail we can’t stand behind today. Before you count on either, talk to your CPA on the tax side. We’ll tell you honestly what we know and what we don’t.
Hail, weather, and the long view
This is southwest Missouri. Hail is part of the deal. A ground mount takes the same weather a roof array does, and the panels we install are built to a hail rating. If a storm does damage an array, we inspect and document the damage in detail, including the deeper testing that shows damage the naked eye misses, and we provide you a thorough report and contractor estimate you can submit to your insurer. Coverage decisions stay between you and your insurance company. That documentation work applies to ground mounts and roof systems both.
The one genuine upside of a ground mount after a storm: it’s a lot easier for us to inspect and service a panel at eye level than one three stories up on a farmhouse roof.
So what should you do with this
If you’ve got land and you’ve been told your roof isn’t a good fit for solar, don’t take that as a no. It might just be a no to the roof. Walk your property and think about where the sun hits all day with nothing shading it. That open spot is probably where your system wants to go.

How much land does a ground mount need? More than most people guess, but usually a small fraction of an acreage property. A home-size system needs an open, unshaded footprint that we mark during the site visit. If you’ve got pasture or an unused field corner, you almost certainly have room.
Can I still farm or graze around it? Around it, yes, plenty of folks do. We fence or lay out the array so you can mow, graze nearby, or keep working the surrounding ground. We’ll talk through the layout so it fits how you use the property.
Is a ground mount harder to maintain than a roof system? Actually easier. Everything’s at standing height, so cleaning, inspection, and any repair is simpler and safer than climbing on a roof. That’s one of the quiet advantages.
